An internal audit can be an overwhelming prospect, especially if you\u2019re new to the company or internal auditing in general.

How to audit a process using the turtle diagram<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s very easy to miss things as you\u2019re working through an internal audit, particularly if you\u2019re auditing a process with many inputs. The turtle diagram gives you a holistic way to think about and examine each part of a process\u2014everything that goes into it, and everything that should come out.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n

The Process (The Body)<\/h3>\n

The process is at the center of the turtle because it\u2019s the key to everything you\u2019re about to do. Start by defining the process that you\u2019ll be auditing. In this case, let\u2019s say it\u2019s the manufacturing process for one of your company\u2019s devices. The body of the turtle consists of outlining all the procedures that make up this process and becoming familiar with everything you\u2019re about to dive into. <\/p>\n

Input (The Head)<\/h3>\n

Your inputs will be everything<\/em> that goes into this process. So, to continue with our manufacturing example, you\u2019ll need to identify things like the materials you\u2019re using, the specifications for them, and the suppliers providing you with the materials. <\/p>\n
