Called Beqvez, Pfizer\u2019s therapy is also under review by the Food and Drug Administration, with a decision expected <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biopharmadive.com\/news\/pfizer-hemophilia-b-gene-therapy-fda-review\/653990\/\">in the second quarter of 2024<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>After investing heavily in gene therapy in the 2010s, <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biopharmadive.com\/news\/pfizer-early-stage-rare-disease-cancer-pare-back\/639824\/\">Pfizer has backed away<\/a> from the kind of treatment represented by Beqvez, which uses viral vectors to deliver a functional gene into the body. Its hemophilia A and Duchenne muscular dystrophy therapies have faced safety delays, and the drugmaker has missed out on becoming a first mover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dive Insight:<\/h3>\n<p>Hemophilia and other blood disorders like sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia have drawn intense investment from genetic medicine developers. in December, the FDA approved two such treatments for sickle cell, clearing Vertex Pharmaceuticals\u2019 gene editing drug Casgevy and Bluebird bio\u2019s viral vector therapy Lyfgenia.<\/p>\n<p>In hemophilia B \u2014 the more uncommon of the two types of the bleeding disorder \u2014 <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biopharmadive.com\/news\/hemophilia-gene-therapy-fda-approval-hemgenix-csl-uniqure\/636999\/\">Hemgenix has been on the U.S. market<\/a> since November 2022, where it has a list price of $3.5 million. Australia-based CSL, which licensed the treatment from <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biopharmadive.com\/news\/uniqure-csl-behring-hemophilia-gene-therapy\/580507\/\">gene therapy pioneer UniQure<\/a>, hasn\u2019t broken out sales revenue from Hemgenix in its most recent financial reports.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, the two companies will be competing to treat <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ahcdc.ca\/storage\/pdf\/21\/FIX-2021.pdf\">around 700 people<\/a>, some of whom may be successfully treated with factor protein replacements and might not seek out gene therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Being on the market first is an advantage for drugmakers, and even more so for gene therapies intended to be one-time treatments.
