Medical imaging has revolutionized diagnostics with artificial intelligence (AI) providing the unprecedented accuracy for fast detection and personalized patient care. The year 2023 for India’s medtech industry characterized by resilience, innovation, provided push toward enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality amid global health challenges.

According to Chandra Ganjoo, group chief executive officer, Trivitron Healthcare, integration of AI in medical imaging emerged as a standout development, revolutionizing diagnostics by providing healthcare professionals with unprecedented precision for early disease detection.

Even telemedicine experienced accelerated growth in 2023, fuelled by the ongoing global health crisis. Remote patient monitoring, virtual consultations, and digital health platforms became integral components of the healthcare ecosystem, demonstrating the industry’s adaptability and commitment to ensuring continuity of care, she added.

Investments and collaborations surged in 2023, creating a conducive environment for research and development. Public-private partnerships played a pivotal role in strengthening the medtech ecosystem. Simultaneously, there was a notable shift toward local production and indigenous manufacturing of medical devices. Government initiatives like Make in India and the new medical device policy 2023 incentivized the establishment of manufacturing units within the country, reducing import dependency, creating job opportunities, and nurturing sectoral growth, Ganjoo told Pharmabiz.

Looking forward to 2024, the medtech industry in India will undergo further advancements, with artificial intelligence continuing to be a driving force. The applications of AI in diagnostics, drug discovery, and personalized medicine are set to expand, promising unprecedented accuracy and speed in medical diagnoses for more effective and individualized patient care, she noted.

Anticipating a surge in demand, 2024 is expected to witness the establishment of advanced manufacturing facilities for medical devices. These emphasize quality and scalability, not only to meet domestic demand but also position India as a global hub for medtech manufacturing. This strategic shift aligns with the government’s ongoing ‘Make in India’ campaign, promoting self-reliance and reducing reliance on imports, said Ganjoo.

Further, digital health platforms and wearables will undergo further evolution, with the integration of data from wearable devices and electronic health records will provide a holistic view of an individual’s health, enabling proactive interventions and personalized treatment plans.

India is actively seeking notable progress in sequencing technology, with a particular focus on next-generation sequencing (NGS) applications. Emphasis on NGS highlights the country’s commitment to staying at the forefront of genomic research and personalized medicine. Concurrently, the nation is witnessing groundbreaking strides in CT scan technology, with a significant emphasis on local production through the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This flow not only signifies progress but also reflects India’s move towards self-reliance within a remarkably short timeframe.

In terms of technological advancements, regulatory bodies are expected to refine and adapt existing frameworks, striking a balance between innovation and patient safety. These regulatory updates will play a crucial role in shaping the industry’s growth and ensuring that new technologies adhere to stringent quality standards, she stated.

Building upon the foundation laid in 2023, the medtech industry in India is set to scale new heights in 2024. Technological advancements and robust manufacturing capabilities, will drive its evolution toward a brighter, more resilient future, said Ganjoo.
