With rare exceptions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies validate their business plans through clinical trials, results from which are often presented and dissected at medical conferences throughout the year. These are the forums where executives get to showcase the “proof of concept” they so frequently talk about.
Some meetings tend to spotlight the early human research that first indicates a new treatment’s potential. Others are for the late-stage study findings that can pave the way toward regulatory approval.
Below, BioPharma Dive has collected schedules for the key medical meetings remaining in 2024 and planned in 2025, as well as for a few key industry events.
Top medical and industry meetings in 2024 and 2025
17th Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease
Oct. 29 – Nov. 1, 2024
Madrid
Focused on medicines for Alzheimer’s disease, CTAD hosts researchers and experts in the field to discuss new treatment approaches for the neurological condition. Typically, these discussions concern clinical research, but the conference now has two recently approved drugs to spotlight: Eisai and Biogen’s Leqembi and Eli Lilly’s Kisunla.
The Liver Meeting
Nov. 15 – 19, 2024
San Diego
Thousands of hepatology professionals gather each year at the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases’ annual meeting. The 75th iteration will host courses, lectures and workshops discussing various topics surrounding liver diseases including pediatrics, clinical trial design and the use of GLP-1s as potential treatments.
American Heart Association Scientific Sessions
Nov. 16 – 18, 2024
Chicago
AHA is always a major forum for the latest research on medicines to treat diseases of the heart. In 2024, the meeting will spotlight, among other things, the so-called GLP-1 agonists that have shown great promise at curbing heart risk. A featured session on Nov. 17 will discuss the drugs and what AHA is calling a “new frontier in cardiovascular therapeutics.”
American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting
Dec. 7 – 10, 2024
San Diego
In 2023, ASH’s annual meeting coincided with the U.S. approval of two gene therapies for sickle cell disease. 2024’s conference may not have as dramatic an introduction, but is just as likely to feature compelling new research on treatments for diseases of the blood.
J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference
TBD
San Francisco
Every year, biopharma investors and executives descend on San Francisco’s Union Square to talk deals. With luck, a handful of companies will have new acquisitions or partnerships to announce during the meeting’s first few days — M&A auspices that will read closely for signs of what’s to come in the year ahead.
BIO CEO and Investor Conference
Feb. 10 – 11, 2025
New York
Fittingly for a conference hosted in New York, BIO CEO has an investor focus. Panels and fireside chats with industry leaders fill the agenda, but the meeting is also the site of thousands of partnering meetings between attendees, according to the organizer.
American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Session
March 29 – 31, 2025
Chicago
The growing body of evidence showing that treating obesity reduces heart-related complications is turning discussions at cardiology meetings from narrow examinations of biomarkers like cholesterol to broader debates about metabolic risk. With numerous clinical trials generating data in obesity, ACC is likely to feature presentations that help inform the field’s direction.
American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting
April 5 – 9, 2025
San Diego
In January 2020, then Roche Pharmaceuticals CEO Bill Anderson predicted this decade would be as important for neuroscience research as the 2010s were for oncology. AAN is the forum for assessing how well his prediction is panning out, often featuring the latest findings in research for diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkison’s.
American Association of Cancer Research Annual Meeting
April 25 – 30, 2025
Chicago
While the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s meeting often gets billed as the field’s largest conference, AACR has become an equally major gathering for cancer research, particularly earlier-stage findings on new drug mechanisms of action or treatment modalities.
European Association for the Study of the Liver Congress
May 7 – 10, 2025
Amsterdam
From hepatitis C to MASH, the burden of liver diseases is large and costly. Europe’s main hepatology meeting is an international forum for the latest research into these disorders as clinicians present data on risk factors and new treatment approaches.
American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy Annual Meeting
May 13 – 17, 2025
New Orleans
ASGCT has grown with the cell and gene therapy field, becoming a premier conference as the sector has expanded and treatments have advanced further into human testing. While much is still promising with such therapies, the difficulties companies face in successfully marketing them have made the meeting a health check for the sector as well.
American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting
May 30 – June 3, 2025
Chicago
ASCO is a lodestone for cancer drug research with the highest profile and widest impact. The data presented each year at the McCormick Place in Chicago often changes treatment standards, as well as makes (or breaks) the fortunes of drug developers.
BIO International Convention
June 16 – 19, 2025
Boston
Always following closely on the heels of ASCO, BIO’s International Convention is a important convener for biotech and pharma companies’ business development teams. It’s also regularly a venue for industry leaders to discuss and debate the top challenges facing the sector.
American Diabetes Association 85th Scientific Session
June 20 – 23, 2025
Chicago

European Society of Cardiology Annual Congress
Aug. 29 – Sept. 1, 2025
Madrid
In 2025, ESC will be held together with the World Congress of Cardiology, a co-hosting that last occurred in 2019. The conference organizers say the collaboration will highlight how heart disease remains the world’s leading cause of death.
European Society of Medical Oncology Congress
Oct. 17 – 21, 2025
Berlin
ESMO is Europe’s answer to ASCO and just as often features standard-shifting cancer research. While immunotherapy remains an active area of exploration for drugmakers, increasingly other treatment types like antibody-drug conjugates and radiopharmaceuticals have been featured at oncology conferences.
