In back-to-back Nature papers, independent groups revealed that intervening in macrophage-fibroblast cross-talk could reduce cardiac fibrosis. Both groups found that IL-1β signaling from specific macrophage populations activates fibroblasts, and reinforced the role of the fibroblast transcription factor MEOX1 as a key regulator of heart failure.
