Imagine a world where there is no anger, with people becoming more calm and productive. Well, you may think that it’s some wishful thinking. Whereas in reality, we all get angry due to stress, deadlines, and many other things. But how do you manage your anger? Do you attend anger management classes or therapies for hours every few days? What if I tell you to forget about all those and just take a pill? 

Now, You must be wondering what is the relationship between your anger and this magical pill, right? And how this capsule, which was linked with schizophrenia prevention earlier, can now calm you down.  Well, I am talking about the Fish oil Pill.

It’s not me, but the researchers from the University of Pennsylvania who have proved it with their studies. According to their studies, 28% of the people experienced a short-term reduction in their aggregation due to this golden capsule. The researchers conducted 29 random controlled trials across 3,918 participants, resulting in a jaw-dropping meta-analysis report. 

Now, imagine the level of anger a prison will experience. Can a simple change in their

diet help them? The neuro criminologist Adrian Raine believes omega-3 has a much more significant role than just being a part of the dinner table or doctor’s office. Her vision is to use omega-3 in the criminal justice system. 

At the beginning of this year, she stated, “I think the time has come to implement omega-3 supplementation to reduce aggression, irrespective of whether the setting is the community, the clinic, or the criminal justice system.” 

The average 16-week trials conducted from 1996 to 2024 were included in the studies. From rebellious teens to hot-headed men in their 60s, had shown a reduction in both reactive and proactive aggregation. Making this tiny capsule the emerging superhero. However, more research is needed. 

Raine said, “At the very least, parents seeking treatment for an aggressive child should know that in addition to any other treatment that their child receives, an extra portion or two of fish each week could also help. “

She further adds, “Omega-3 is not a magic bullet that is going to completely solve the problem of violence in society. But can it help? Based on these findings, we firmly believe it can, and we should start to act on the new knowledge we have.” 

While the scientific community is working to understand the role of omega-3, this tiny omega-3 capsule is making its own place in every household. From heart health to mental well-being to now taming the temper, omega-3 has much more potential than we can imagine. 

Omega-3 not just lowers the risk of blood pressure by decreasing the triglycerides in the blood but also helps reduce joint inflammation in rheumatoid disease. It helps in nourishing brain and eye functions. Studies have shown that this tiny capsule helps to overcome neurological disorders, too. Omega-3 is rich in foods such as marine fish, soybeans, and walnuts. 

This year, Raine, along with Lia Brodrick, published a detailed study on the role of omega-3 in reducing aggressive behavior in the journal Aggression and Violent Behavior.

Though the early studies show a promising future, we still need more research. Maybe it’s time we dive into the ocean of research related to omega-3 and unlock the mysteries behind it. We know that this capsule is not a magic bullet that will save society from violence. But next time, if you have an outburst,  just take a chill pill, sorry fish pill, and stay calm.
