New technologies and treatments revolutionizing diabetes care: Dr Ajay Aggarwal

As diabetes continues to rise globally, healthcare experts are increasingly turning to innovative tools and treatments to manage the condition. Dr Ajay Aggarwal, chairperson of the Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, sheds light on the latest advancements in diabetes care and emphasizes the importance of personalized treatment strategies.
“There are several methods to measure blood sugar levels, and each has its own advantages. The most common approach is to visit a lab for a blood sugar test. However, for those who find lab visits difficult, a glucometer is a convenient alternative. With a glucometer, individuals can monitor their blood sugar levels both during fasting and after meals, helping them keep track of fluctuations and provide valuable information to their healthcare provider,” Dr Aggarwal explains.
Dr Aggarwal also stresses the importance of the HbA1c test, which provides a long-term picture of blood sugar levels. “The HbA1c test reflects the average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months, making it an essential tool for doctors to assess how well a patient’s diabetes has been controlled. It’s crucial for tailoring treatment plans effectively,” he explains.
In recent years, one of the most significant breakthroughs in diabetes management has been the Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS). “This revolutionary technology involves a small sensor placed on the patient’s arm, which monitors glucose levels continuously for up to 14 days. The data is transmitted via Bluetooth to a smartphone, providing real-time sugar readings every few minutes,” Dr Aggarwal shares.
“This is particularly helpful for patients on insulin therapy, where blood sugar levels tend to fluctuate. While CGMS is still emerging in India and can be costly—around Rs. 5,000 for a 14-day cycle—it’s a game-changer in diabetes care,” he further adds.
When it comes to diabetes treatment, Dr Aggarwal explains that managing the condition involves a combination of lifestyle changes, medications, and sometimes insulin. “Each patient’s treatment plan is unique, depending on the type of diabetes and how well their blood sugar levels are controlled. For instance, the American Diabetes Association recommends fasting blood sugar levels between 80-130 mg/dL and postprandial (PP) sugar levels below 180 mg/dL,” Dr Aggarwal informs. However, he points out that these targets can be adjusted based on individual circumstances and further says that for children with Type 1 diabetes or elderly patients, especially those over 80 or dealing with other health issues like cancer, these goals can be relaxed.
Advances in diabetes medications are also helping to improve patient outcomes. “There are many new oral medications available today, each with its own set of benefits and potential side effects. It’s essential for doctors to determine the right medication for each patient. If oral medications are not enough to control blood sugar, insulin therapy becomes necessary. Insulin options are evolving, and some newer types only require a weekly injection, which represents another significant leap in diabetes care,” concludes Dr. Aggarwal.
Additionally, Dr Aggarwal highlights that some newer diabetes medications also help with weight loss, a crucial factor in managing the condition. “While these medications can offer significant benefits, they must always be used under medical supervision. Self-medication is risky and can lead to adverse effects. Proper guidance from a healthcare provider ensures patients can maximize the benefits of their treatment,” he cautions.
“With ongoing research and new technologies emerging, we are hopeful that diabetes management will become even more personalized and effective in the years to come. Dr. Aggarwal emphasizes the importance of regular monitoring, individualized treatment plans, and professional medical guidance to ensure the best outcomes for patients,” he concludes.
