
Lifesciences industry envisages continued advancements in genetic research & population genomics in 2025

The life sciences sector has witnessed significant transformation driven by advancements in infrastructure, technology, and accessibility. These cover from genetic testing and precision medicine to the growing integration of generative AI in various aspects of healthcare. There has been an accelerated drug discovery to efficient clinical trials to quicker approvals to enhanced diagnostics and optimizing healthcare delivery.

One of the most notable trends of 2024 has been the increasing emphasis on personalized medicine, and adoption of genomics especially for disease screening and diagnosis. Advances in genetic diagnostics have allowed for more targeted and effective treatments for various conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and rare genetic disorders. This year, we have seen an expansion in genetic testing accessibility, moving beyond metropolitan areas to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India, driven by greater awareness. With this expansion, patients now have access to early diagnostics and the tools for timely interventions, he added.
The AI revolution has accelerated the development of life-saving treatments but are also drive cost-efficiency in drug development and personalized medicine. Positive strides are already evident in initiatives addressing women’s health, child health, rare diseases, and tuberculosis containment. These programmes align with broader national health objectives, particularly the Government of India’s goal to eliminate TB by 2030, Chakrabartty told Pharmabiz in an email.
Looking ahead to 2025, we anticipate continued advancements in genetic research and population genomics, with more nations prioritizing the collection of genetic data to better understand health trends and develop personalized healthcare solutions. In India, where the burden of cancer and TB is rising, innovative technologies like liquid biopsy for cancer detection and whole genome sequencing (WGS) based TB testing offer transformative potential for improving diagnosis and timely treatment.
Similarly, WGS based TB test for detecting multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) holds the potential to revolutionize TB diagnosis in India. While India has made significant strides in closing the gap of missed TB cases, as acknowledged by the WHO, WGS based TB tests can play a key role in accelerating diagnosis, streamlining treatment regimens, and reducing transmission. Together, these innovations offer hope for a future where earlier and more accurate diagnoses, tailored treatments, and more efficient healthcare delivery can substantially reduce the impact of cancer and TB in India and beyond.
More collaborations between public and private sectors should drive the widespread adoption of genomics for better patient outcomes. Further, as multiomics gain momentum and the combined data from genomics, transcriptomics, epigenetics, and proteomics provides an integrated approach to understanding molecular changes, we anticipate several new breakthroughs in drug development, and in improving patient outcomes in the near future.
