A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11919110B2) discloses a method and apparatus for submerged arc welding (SAW) operations. The method involves scanning the geometry and cross-section of a weld joint, estimating the total number of runs needed for welding using SAW, monitoring the SAW operation in real-time, determining any discrepancies between desired and actual weld parameters, and adjusting the power supply to modify the AC welding power signal to compensate for the differences. The apparatus includes components such as a wire feeder mechanism, flux delivery system, power supply, and a controller that scans the joint, estimates the runs required, monitors the operation, identifies discrepancies, and adjusts the power supply accordingly.

The patent also covers non-transitory computer-readable storage media encoded with software that can perform similar functions as the apparatus. The software instructions enable scanning the joint, estimating the runs needed, monitoring the SAW operation, identifying discrepancies, and adjusting the AC welding power signal to address any differences. Additionally, the software includes instructions to control the welding power supply based on predetermined initial wire feed speed, ensuring efficient and accurate welding processes. This patent highlights advancements in SAW technology by integrating real-time monitoring and adjustment capabilities to enhance the quality and efficiency of welding operations.
