UGC Announces Discontinuation of M.Phil. Degree in Compliance with New Regulations

In a significant development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) degree program across universities. This decision comes in accordance with Clause 14 of the recently enacted UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022.

The UGC has taken note of a few universities that continue to invite fresh applications for M.Phil. programs. However, it is imperative to clarify that the M.Phil. degree is no longer recognized as a valid academic qualification.

Clause 14 of the UGC Regulations 2022 clearly stipulates that Higher Educational Institutions are prohibited from offering M.Phil. programs. These regulations, which were officially published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022, aim to streamline and enhance the standards and procedures for the award of Ph.D. degrees.

As a result, universities across the country are urged to take immediate action to halt admissions to M.Phil. programs for the upcoming academic year 2023-24. Additionally, prospective students are strongly advised against seeking admission to M.Phil. programs in light of this regulatory change.

This decision marks a significant shift in the academic landscape, aligning

educational practices with the newly established UGC guidelines for Ph.D. degree awards. Students and university authorities are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and adjust their academic plans accordingly.
